The Wailin' Jennys - Long Time Traveller

Jam: Long Time Traveller
Good to jam: In times of loss
RIP, uncle Larry Joe Miggins
As of yesterday, my family got the unfortunate news that we lost a member, my uncle, dad's brother and best friend, Larry Joe Miggins, to an unexpected car accident last Friday. Of course, in this devastating time I've been searching for healing through music and was graced by this beautiful song by The Wailin' Jennys today, almost as if on purpose. The lyrics, "your fond embrace I now exchange for better friends above" especially hit home and bring comfort, as I know my other uncle Rory whom we lost in 2007 to melanoma is greeting him in Heaven with welcoming arms (and probably a cold beer, too!). It is also comforting to hear the words, "my soul now seeks another home a brighter world on high." But best of all, a quote from the man himself: "I'm more scared of not living than I am of dying." And anyone who knew or came in contact with my uncle can tell you that he most certainly lived. Rest in peace, Larry. You will be sorely missed.

From left to right: cousin John Hohlt, uncle Matt, uncle Neil, father John, uncle Larry, grandpa Larry, uncle Mike, and my brother Matt.

The song is perfect, and your comments put it all into perspective. The photo of the Miggins men at the foot of the Dowling statue shows their pride in Texas culture and Irish roots. I've lost a good friend, but the Miggins clan have suffered another tragic personal loss. Our thoughts here in Ireland go out to you.

Beautiful selection and beautifully written. You also share the love and appreciation of lyrics with your Grandmother Kathleen and Aunt Maureen.

Thanks so much, Julia. These four songs got me through yesterday, one of the saddest days of my life. Uncle Robert and I listened to two tracks from the Luna Live album, "Anasthesia" and "Hello Little One." Also, earlier it was the Saw Doctors' "To Win Just Once" and "Sing a Powerful Song." The Saw Doctors are a great band from Galway. I have these CD's if you want to copy them.

Music is medicinal, and your Uncle Larry is up there healing us all. See you soon, hang in there now.

Thank you all so much for your comments. It makes me happy that this song has reached out and touched you all despite the great distances we have between us. Neil- thanks for the recommendations. I would love to grab copies from you when I'm in town. See you tomorrow in Houston.
